The Raspberry Pi Foundation has unveiled the latest iteration of its flagship model, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, now with an impressive 8GB of RAM. This upgrade joins the existing 2GB and 4GB RAM models, offering more power and performance for your projects.

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B already represented a significant leap from the Raspberry Pi 3, delivering desktop performance comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems. Now, with 8GB of LPDDR4 SDRAM, the Pi 4 is even more powerful, providing ample memory for more demanding applications and multitasking.

  Key Features of the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (8GB):  

• Enhanced Processing Power:

  • Broadcom 2711, Quad-Core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8-A) 64-bit SoC clocked at 1.5GHz
  • Improved power consumption and thermals, allowing the CPU to run at 1.5GHz, a 20% increase over the previous Pi 3 model (1.2GHz)

  • Dual-display support at resolutions up to 4K via two micro-HDMI ports
  • Hardware video decode at up to 4Kp60, supporting H.265 (4Kp60), H.264, and MPEG-4 (1080p60)

• Faster Wireless Connectivity:

  • Dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless LAN (802.11 b/g/n/ac) for faster networking with less interference
  • Improved PCB antenna technology for better reception
  • Bluetooth 5.0 for greater range and connectivity options, allowing you to use a wireless keyboard/trackpad without additional dongles

• Enhanced Ethernet Connectivity:

  • Significantly faster wired networking with USB 3.0 technology
  • Upgraded USB/LAN chip providing speeds up to 10x faster than previous models

• Compatibility and Expandability:

  • 40-pin GPIO header, fully backward-compatible with previous models
  • New PoE header pins (requires standoffs to avoid contact with certain HATs like Rainbow HAT)

  Power Supply Adjustments:  

To accommodate the slightly higher peak currents required by the new memory package, the power supply components have been adjusted. A switch-mode power supply was relocated from the right-hand side of the board next to the USB 2.0 sockets to a new switcher next to the USB-C power connector.

  Software & OS:  

• NOOBS: Ideal for beginners, the New Out Of Box Software (NOOBS) installation manager offers a choice of operating systems from the standard distributions.
• Raspbian: Recommended for regular use, with detailed online guides for installation and usage. It includes a variety of software examples to help you get started, along with comprehensive information on Linux commands and system management.
